African American children rarely get the opportunity to see themselves in the role of the hero or heroin in American children's books. The imagery that our children see at an early age plays a tremendous role in shaping their perspectives, values, and self-esteem.
Dr Roosevelt Mitchell III understands this. As an award-winning educator, Dr. Mitchell has worked for many years helping black children develop in productive ways at an early age. This is what led him to create "The Adventures of Kayden," a series of children's books featuring a character that he bases upon himself at an early age.
Kayden's adventures are excellent learning and teaching tools for our children, who are often seeking ways to see themselves in the world around them. You can read these books with your children to help them with early literacy, you can use the books as templates for the development of healthy choices, empathy and values, and you can also allow them to see images of themselves that are fruitful and empowering.
The package includes the following:
Kayden Is Different
Meet Kayden. He is just like many children today with a disability. Whether it's a physical or mental disability, there are those who are bullied because of the way they are. Being bullied ruins any child's self-esteem, but the effect is even greater for children with disabilities. Unfortunately children who do the bullying do not understand that those born "different" are just like them. With beautiful, and sometimes humorous, illustrations, this is a book grown-ups will love reading over and over to kids—both young and old.
Kayden Is Different Activity Book
Kids will have hours of fun with this activity-packed book. There are puzzles to complete, pictures to color in, drawing activities, as well as each page out of the Kayden Is Different book that kids can color for added fun. This activity book is a great way for kids to learn while having fun!
Kayden Goes To School
Kayden Goes To School is the next adventure for the popular children's character, Kayden. On this adventure Kayden learns the life lesson of not giving up. This book includes discussion questions at the end of the book so Educators and Parents have a seamless way of discussing the importance of not giving up in life.
